LUCA

I leaned up against the side of Galina’s car, watching her hustle over to me in her white coat and blue scrubs. She was rocking her signature bun, parted down the middle and at the nape of her neck.

“Ooowee,” I said, my lips curving. “Something ‘bout that white coat has me in my feelings, Doc.”

She slowed her strides and looked down at herself like she didn’t know what she had on. When she lifted her head again there was a bashful smile on her pretty ass face. I crossed my arms and licked my lips.

“Come here,” I beckoned, dipping my head with my bottom lip tucked between my teeth. “I came all this way for a kiss. Don’t make me wait longer than I’ve already had to.”

Truthfully, I’d been passing by on my way to New York to meet with Pietro and then I planned to make an impromptu stop to see Dmitri at his bar. I wasn’t sure if she’d talked to him or not, but he deserved to know what was up and a phone call wouldn’t suffice.

Galina walked up to me, and I opened my arms so she could fit in my space, right where I knew she belonged. We stared at one another for a brief moment before she lifted up on her tiptoes and gave me her lips.

I kissed her with purpose, intention.

She needed to know that I missed her. That even though it had only been forty-eight hours since we last saw one another, I wanted her in my presence again so I could make up for the way our date ended. I didn’t release her until she whimpered into my mouth. She still had some hours left in her shift and I respected her career enough not to take it too far out here, no matter how bad I wanted to bend her over and continue showing how much I needed her. Shit sounded crazy but it was true.

I pulled back and pressed my forehead to hers, taking a moment to gather myself before leaning back and looking into her eyes. The parking lot was dark, but my truck was parked directly in front of her car with the headlights on low. I could see her perfectly.

“What’s the matter, baby?” I asked and cupped her cheek.

There was a sadness in her eyes, something that I spotted when she first got to me, but I was too selfish not to get my kiss before investigating what it was. Now that she’d eased the craving a little, I was ready to get the bottom of the look.

“How do you know something is wrong?”

“I can see it in your eyes,” I told her.

She closed her eyes and sighed, and I leaned forward to kiss both eyelids. Then, I dropped my forehead against hers again and said, “You can talk to me.”

I’d never in my life felt like I knew someone longer than I actually had, but I could feel that something was wrong with her. That someone or possibly something had upset my baby.
